Abstract
164,525. Merz, F. March 16, 1920. Vapours, utilizing for effecting further evaporation.-A plant for evaporating, concentrating, or distilling liquids or for drying materials, comprising an evaporator or drying-chamber and a condenser for the vapours generated, is combined with a heat-transferring system of the type used for refrigeration, whereby the latent heat given out by the condensation of the vapours is transferred to the material in the drier or evaporator. The heat-transferring system consists of a closed circuit containing a volatile medium such as carbonic acid, ammonia, sulphurous acid, methyl chloride, or ether, which is vaporized by the heat given up in the condenser. The resulting vapours are compressed and liquefied under pressure, the heat given up being transferred to the material undergoing evaporation or drying. One form of apparatus consists of a drying-chamber 29 and a condenser 28 connected by a conduit 30, together with a heat-transferring system consisting of a vaporizing-chamber 25, a compressor 11, a liquefying-chamber 26, and a conduit 12 leading the liquefied medium back to the chamber 25. Pipes 21, 22 enable the air initially present to be removed through a pipe 23 leading to a pump, and a pipe 24 serves for the introduction of the volatile medium. Reduced and increased pressures may be maintained in the drier 29 and the condenser 28 respectively by means of a fan 4 in the conduit 30. In apparatus for evaporating liquids, the evaporator and condenser comprise heat-exchangers consisting of vertical tubes between headers, and the liquid under treatment and the volatile medium are caused tp flow in thin films over one surface of the tubes in the evaporator and condenser respectively. The liquid under treatment is returned from the base of the evaporator for further concentration. A heating-jacket furnishes a supplementary supply of heat. The evaporating-plant and the heat-transferring system may be separated, the heat being transmitted from the condenser to the liquid medium, and from the vaporous medium to the evaporator, by the circulation of another fluid.
