Abstract
163,109. Marks, E. C. R., (Chicago Process Co.). Feb. 10, 1920. Treatment preliminary to tanning.-In a liming and dehairing process, the hide is first soaked in an aqueous solution weak in lime and mild in sodium sulphide, is then washed to eliminate the sulphide, and is subsequently soaked in a stronger solution of lime only. The process may be conducted in stages in a series of vats as shown. Vats a, b contain water for initial and final washing. Vat No. 3 is kept charged with fresh water for the intermediate washing. Vats Nos. 4, 5, 6, and 7 are charged with lime-water of increasing strengths, Vats Nos. 1 and 2 with weaker lime water and sodium sulphide. Each time the hides are moved, the lime water is transferred to the next vat in the opposite direction, passing through the pipe 12 from vat 4 to vat 2 where the sodium sulphide is added.
