Abstract
162,770. Macrorie, A. K., and Appleton, W. A. Feb. 2, 1920. Audible reception of unmodulated continuous waves; thermionic valves, arrangements and connections of.-Relates to means for receiving continuous-wave signals wherein the amplitude of the received energy is directly varied at an audible frequency by means of a damping-valve controlled by a second valve oscillating at a low frequency. A triode valve C, D, E is placed across the inductance A of the tuned receiving-circuit A, B, and the effective resistance of this valve is varied by imposing a low-frequency alternation of potential upon its grid E by means of a generator valve KLM coupled to the grid circuit of the first valve through the coils G, H. Fig. 2 shows the effective result upon the amplitude of the oscillatory currents flowing in the receiving- circuit A, B, the curve V, G, V<1> representing the varying potential of the grid E. After rectification, the modified or 'damped signal-energy appears in the telephones as a series of wavetrains of audible frequency. The damping-valve' CDE may be coupled to the ancde circuit of the last valve in a high-frequency amplifying-set. Or instead of being inserted directly across the inductance A, the damping-valve :may be inductively coupled thereto by means of a step-up transformer.
