Abstract

159,472. Loewe, S. Feb. 23, 1920, [Con vention date]. Thermionic amplifiers; undesired signals, eliminating or limiting.-In multivalve ther mionic amplifiers of the type in which energy is transferred from one valve to the next by a resistance coupling, the internal resistance of a three-electrode valve is used as a variable resistance coupling. Fig. 1 shows the invention applied to a wireless receiver. Energy received by a frame aerial 1 is amplified by valves 6, 13, which are coupled together by the plate-filament resistance of a valve 8. The resistance of the valve 8 is varied in accordance with the received energy, by controlling its grid potential by means of a transformer 10, the primary winding of which is connected to the grid of the valve 6, whilst the secondary winding is included in the grid circuit of the valve 8. In a modification, Fig. 2, the resistance of the valve 8 is varied at signal frequency by connecting the grid and filament across part of the inductance 14 of an independent oscillating circuit 14, 15, tuned to signal frequency. By this means, interference from disturbing signals of other frequencies is prevented- The device may also be applied to the amplification of signals in wireless and line telephony.
