Abstract

Vanadium ores are treated with oleum and the solution is reduced for instance by sulphur dioxide or hydrochloric acid or a carbonaceous reducing agent may be added to liberate sulphur dioxide from the solution, or in case chlorine is present in the ore, an added reducing-agent may be unnecessary. The solution is then diluted with water and the lead sulphate separated, leaving vanadyl sulphate in solution. The vanadyl sulphate may be neutralized to precipitate hypovanadic acid, or an oxidizing-agent such as alkali permanganate may be added to obtain vanadic anhydride, or the solution may be electrolized in a diaphragm cell, when vanadic anhydride separates at the anode and a lower oxide at the cathode.
