Abstract

2-Chloroalkanals having at least 3 carbon atoms in the molecule are prepared by chlorinating the corresponding alkanal with sulphuryl chloride and isolating the 2-chloroalkanal by distillation. To improve the yield, a procedure is followed in which the chlorination is carried out in the presence of a water-binding agent and/or carrying out the final stage of the distillation in the presence of concentrated sulphuric acid.
