Abstract

154,393. Grice, A. G. Sept. 26, 1919. Axle structures. - The road wheels rotate in bearings 7 in a sub-frame S universally-jointed to the main frame, and are driven through friction gearing from a cross-shaft 12 mounted in sliding bearings controlled by springs 16 which press the driving friction rollers 10 and the driven friction drums 8 together. The bearings of the shaft 12 are further controlled bv tension rods 20 which are operated (1) separately by the steering-gear to free one road wheel on curves, or (2) together to disconnect the engine from the road wheels. The friction rollers 10 are mounted on the shaft 12 through universal joints to equalize the pressure between the rollers and the drums over the surface of contact. The shaft 12 may be driven through the friction-disk variable-speed gear D, W from a universally-jointed propeller shaft 2. Brakes may be applied to the friction drums 8.
