Speed measurement by sighting terrestrial objects.-In an instrument for use on aircraft for determining the ground speed, and of the kind in which a perforated or transparent strip is caused to travel, with reference to a sighting-aperture, at the same apparent speed as objects on the ground, the distance between the strip and the sighting aperture is adjustable. The slotted strip 7 is wound on spools 10 in a housing 13 and is uniformly moved by a sprocket 11 actuated by clockwork 12. The housing 13 is mounted on a casing 6 having the sighting-aperture 9 at its upper end, and can be racked vertically by the handwheel 14, the distance of the housing from the sighting-aperture being indicated on a scale 15. The casing 6 is mounted on an externallytoothed carrier 2 which can be rotated by the pinion 4 until objects on the ground appear to move in the same direction as the strip. The angle of drift is then indicated on a scale 5. To enable the strip to be moved at different uniform speeds either the housing 13 or the clockwork 12 may be removed and replaced by a different one.
