Abstract
827,528. Gear testing. BROWN & SONS (HUDDERSFIELD) Ltd., D. Dec. 31, 1956 [Dec. 31, 1955], No. 37544/55. Class 106 (2). A device for testing the axial pitch of helical gears comprises a frame a having means a<SP>1</SP> for locating it against the end face x of a gear to be tested, guides b on the frame a, parallel to the axis of the gear to be tested (not shown), a carriage c slidable on the guides b, a master gear e adjustably mounted on the carriage and a graduated disc i associated with the master gear e to show a reading after a traverse movement of the carriage c. In use the master e is adjusted on the carriage so that it meshes with the helical teeth of the gear under test. The carriage c is then driven along the guides b a predetermined distance by an electric motor f, and the angle through which the gear e has revolved is read from the disc i with the aid of a microscope i. From this reading, the axial pitch of the gear being tested can be derived. Alternatively the disc i may indicate the axial pitch directly.
