Abstract

1534954 Separating sheets J SCHIFF 26 April 1976 [28 April 1975] 16889/76 Heading B8R Envelopes are separated from the bottom of a pile supported on endless belts by a roller 42, Fig. 7, having a relatively high frictional surface of sponge rubber. An elongated member 44 having a cross-sectional shape of a quarter sector of a circle, and pivotable about an axis 52, prevents double feed. The member is adjustably biased towards the roller 42 by means 58, 60 and has a relatively low frictional surface of nylon. A plate 62 with a taper 62d spreads the pile. A switch senses 'no pile' and stops roller 42. The separator is incorporated in a machine which applies labels from a web 64 to envelopes which are then franked. The web is fed from a zig-zag stack on a platform 66, Fig. 2, via rollers 68, 70 to a label applying "device, the web then being wound on to a roll 84. The web feed device is foldable into a non- operative position shown dotted. Labelled envelopes are stacked against a stop (22), Fig. 1 (not shown), at the end of belts 26 supported on a hinged platform 24 which can be folded away to encase the web feed device.
