Abstract

1533977 Engraving CROSFIELD ELECTRONICS Ltd 19 Jan 1976 [22 Jan 1975 26 March 1975] 2839/75 and 12763/75 Heading B6J To reduce the variation in the widths of holes or grooves excavated in a surface by a laser beam whose direction of polarization is controlled by a modulating signal, the polarized beam is applied to the surface through an analysing polarizer formed with a central aperture through which the central portion of the beam passes to the focusing lens regardless of its polarization. As shown Brewster windows 11 provide a polarized output from CO 2 laser 10. The electro-optic modulator 12 (e.g. of Gallium arsenide or Cadmium telluride) increases the orthogonal vector of polarization with respect to the vector in the original plane of polarization when a modulating voltage is applied at 13. The beam is amplified in a laser amplifier 14 and passed through Brewster angle polarizers 16 and 18 of germanium and of the transmission kind. Apertures 19 permit the central part of the beam to pass through focusing lens 20 to the surface 22 to be engraved. The method is applicable to the production of gravure printing surfaces.
