Abstract

1531487 Hip-joint prosthesis MAHAY & CIE 12 Dec 1975 [27 Dec 1974] 51077/75 Heading A5R A hip-joint prosthesis comprises a cephalic part formed of a femur piece 1 and a cephalic piece 5, the femur piece being cylindrical with an external thread 2 and having a polygonal section recess 3 in which a correspondingly shaped sleeve 6 of the cephalic piece fits in any of a number of relative angular positions, the cephalic piece being retained by a nut 4 and provided with a plane surface 7 which seats on a prepared surface of the femur. The cotyloid part of the joint has an externally threaded cylindrical portion 8 surmounted by a dome 9 and a part-spherical socket to receive the ball on the cephalic piece and lined with plastics material 11 retained by an annular projection 20. The cotyloid piece is screwed into the hip bone by a tool which engages cutouts 14 and additional securement may be provided by screws which passes through oblique bores 12. For various sizes of joint the ball, socket, bolt 4, sleeve 6 and recess 3 may always have the same size and the prosthesis as a whole is made of chromecobalt alloy with alternately the cephalic part formed from a block of plastics material. A flange may extend from the cotyloid part transverse to the axis of cylindrical part 8 for engaging a surface on the hip bone, and angular adjustment provided between the two pieces of the cephalic part by engaging ridges on that part of plane 7 which contacts the end of femur pieces 1, and said end.
