1477149 Hip joint endoprostheses ENTE OSPEDIALIERO SPECIALIZZATO INSTITUTI ORTOPEDICI RIZZOLI IOR-CTOIECP OFFICINE-OFFICINE ORTOPEDICHE 21 Aug 1974 [27 Aug 1973] 36705/74 Heading A5R A hip joint endoprosthesis comprises a cup 1 arranged to be placed in articulating relation in the acetabulum, said cup member being shaped externally as a part of a sphere greater than a hemispere with a smooth outer partspherical surface and an inner part-spherical cavity 4 which communicates with the outside through a passage 5 defined by a frusto-conical surface, a femoral insert 2 including a stem- 7, for insertion into the femoral bone, and a spheroidal head 6 engaging within said cavity 4 and articulated therein, said cavity 4 being eccentrically located with respect to the outer surface of the cup member so as to be displaced in a direction diametrically opposite said passage. At the connection area of head 6 to the stem, said stem has a lesser cross-sectional dimension than the minimum cross-sectional dimension of passage 5. Thermoplastic polyesters or high density polyethylene may be used for the cup while the stem is made of a titanium alloy. A metal wire 9 in the form of a loop is provided in portion 3 of the cup for X-raying purposes. The cups may be made in a range of sizes but the head 6 of the stem is of a standard size.
