Abstract
1528609 Preparation of 2-hydroxynaphthalene-3-carboxylic acid BASF AG 18 Dec 1975 [20 Dec 1974] 51794/75 Heading C2C A process for the manufacture of 2-hydroxynaphthalene-3-carboxylic acid comprises carboxylating an anhydrous alkali metal salt of #-naphthol by reaction with carbon dioxide at a temperature of from 180 to 300‹ C., adding after said carboxylation an alkali metal hydroxide in an amount of from 0À6 to 1 mole per mole of bis-alkali metal salt of 2-hydroxynaphthalene-3-carboxylic acid formed as a result of the carboxylation, dehydrating the resulting mixture and thereafter effecting further carboxylation by reaction with carbon dioxide, the process optionally including one or more further stages each comprising the steps of adding alkali metal hydroxide, dehydration and carboxylation in which case the amount of alkali metal hydroxide added in each repetition is based on the amount of bis-alkali metal salt of 2-hydroxynaphthalene-3-carboxylic acid formed in the immediately preceding carboxylation stage.
