Abstract
1528599 Magnetic heads SPIN PHYSICS Inc 28 Oct 1975 [29 Oct 1974] 44428/75 Heading G5R A single-track video magnetic tape head has ferrite polepieces defining a transducing gap therebetween and two ceramic wear support pieces (22<SP>1</SP>), (22<SP>11</SP>), Fig. 2 (not shown), extending across the gap one at each side of the track, the ceramic pieces wearing slightly faster than the ferrite polepieces. Magnetic ferrite bars 10, 12 may be glass bonded together to define the transducing gap, or gap-defining material may be deposited by sputtering followed by glass bonding of the bars 10, 12. Slots 23 are then formed in bars 10, 12 and wear support pieces 22 located in the slots. The pieces 22 are preferably of a glass material which devitrifies into a ceramic material on heating the assembly of bars 10, 12 and pieces 22, such heating bonding the pieces 22 in slots 23. The assembly 14 is then contoured along line 30, polished and sliced at 32, 34 through the pieces 22 into individual single track heads the magnetic circuits of which are completed by rear parts of bars 10, 12, such rear parts being separated by a back gap (36), Fig. 2, wider than the track width 26.
