Abstract

1528501 Rendering powder dustless ALUMINIUM CO OF AMERICA 9 Jan 1976 [4 Feb 1975 7 July 1975] 00859/76 Heading C4X Powder, e.g. aluminium powder, is rendered dustless by mixing wet - 200 mesh powder (i.e. less than 74 microns) with a dispersion of- 60 mesh PTFE particles until the powder satisfies a described test for dustlessness, with no PTFE fibre matrix being formed. The amount of PTFE may be 0À1-0À6 wt. per cent based on Al. The dispersion may comprise PTFE particles of size 0À05-0À5 microns slurried in water. In the illustrated layout for producing stearic acid-coated aluminium flakes by milling atomized aluminium or foil scrap with stearic acid and mineral spirits, the PTFE dispersion may be added at the mixer 32A or the lower sludge tank 20, the mixture being vacuum dried with heat at 32B. Alternatively the aluminium powder may be slurried in methanol. The products have sensitizing properties making them useful for incorporation in explosive and blasting compositions. The dustless properties are believed to result from the powder particles being weakly adhered together by PTFE particles, which may be deformed.
