Abstract

1528040 Tearing edge constructions INTERNATIONAL PAPER CO 23 Dec 1975 [24 Nov 1975] 52630/75 Headings B8P and B8M [Also in Division B5] A method of forming a tearing edge, e.g. for web material within a carton comprises cutting a serrated line 46 in a piece of paperboard to define rows of teeth 14, 20, spraying a tooth hardening material 28 on to the paperboard in the region of the teeth to penetrate the paperboard, folding the paperboard so that the teeth 14, 20 overlap in a staggered manner and securing together the portions 12, 18 of paperboard so folded. The hardening material may be a polyurethane lacquer, silicone or nitrocellulose sprayed, e.g. at a pressure of 600-800 p.s.i. from a range of 0À25-0À75 inch, and the portions 12, 18 may be joined by an adhesive 26 after folding at end segments 24. The paperboard may form a blank 44 having walls 32, 36-42 for defining a tubular carton which may be shipped in a flattened state prior to filling. A cut score line 47 may be provided in the panel 42 to facilitate opening.
