Abstract

1526086 Plastics containers and covers therefor METALLURGIE ET PLASTIC SA 4 Nov 1975 [18 Nov 1974] 45733/75 Headings B8D B8P and B8T A plastics container, comprising a cover 12, a body 10 of circular cross-section, and at least one handle 13, is provided with a polygonal body flange 7 of inverted L-shaped cross-section bearing mutually-perpendicular sets of ribs 8 and 9, which mesh with the ribs of adjacent containers when a plurality of such containers are arranged side-by-side on a pallet to prevent relative displacement therebetween. As shown, the flange has a plan configuration of a square with cut-off corners. The or each pair of handles is attached by a cylindrical trunnion 14 moulded at the ends of each handle and received in a slotted cavity 11, 11a in the flange. The flange is stiffened by integral body ribs (not shown) and supplementary ribs 15. In the embodiment of Fig. 8, the handles are formed by stiffened corner portions of the flange. In both the above embodiments, the cover 12 has a body rim engaging lip 33 at the end of a flexible inverted U-shaped rim portion 31. The cover may be secured by a plastics ribbon and sealed by jointing located in the U-shaped portion. In a modification, Figs. 14 and 15 (not shown), the inverted U-shaped cover rim is reinforced by upper ribs (61) or upper and lower sets of ribs (58 and 59) to provide a stiff cover construction the ribs being disposed to facilitate stacking containers. A protective skirt 25 extends downwardly about the container base and is connected thereto by a series of radial ribs 26. In another embodiment, Fig. 10 (not shown), the bottom skirt (54) is deformable, being connected to the base by flexible inclined ribs 65. In addition, the body flange is twelve-sided and has a pair of handle-receiving trunnions (52). The body side wall may be provided with a network of stiffening ribs (56), Figs. 11 and 12 (not shown).
