It is difficult to construct a plastic container which is sufficiently rigid to accommodate a high volume content, especially if the content in question has a large specific weight, e.g. is the case with paint. This problem is even greater if the opening must be sufficiently large for e.g. to allow for the immersion of a painting roller. An insufficient stiffness can easily cause deformation of the container or release of the lid due to transverse shocks during transport by rail or by truck.

A further difficulty in transport is associated with the fact that containers loaded on a standard pallet tend to displace, so that the entire stack of containers is deformed and windswept.

In the case of containers which should preferably be used as disposable containers, the inexpensive and material-saving manufacture also plays a major role. The saving of material also has an impact on transport as weight is reduced.

This provides an inexpensive disposable plastic container, which is particularly well suited for receiving large quantities of heavy liquids such as paint, enabling both the transport of a large number of such filled containers and their use as ordinary paint bucket at the point of use. The FIG. 6 shows an arrangement of ribs 24 connecting the sides of the flange 20 to the conical wall of the container 10. On four of the sides of the flange, these ribs are constructed in such a way that the container can be easily gripped and handled. Parts 22 and 23 of the flange thus act as handles. The tapered container wall 10 is raised above the plane of the flange 20 to form an edge portion 36 adapted to the cover 12.

The cover 12 comprises a central portion 34 which is stiffened by ribs 37 and which is connected to the cover closing device by a flexible wall 31 which, in cross-section, is in the form of a U. The bottom 28 of the container extends smoothly into the container wall 10 by means of rounded transition parts 29 and 30. The bottom 55 of the container comprises a cylindrical portion 54 which serves to receive shock. To improve this shock-absorbing effect, some flexible ribs 65 connect the bottom 55 to the cylindrical portion 54, each rib 65 forming a definite 5 angle cc relative to a corresponding radius. Under impact, these ribs will be more easily bent than radial ribs. The central portion of the base 55 is provided with a circumferential rib 64 (see Fig. 8) which abuts the surface of e.g. a pallet when the container is full.
