Abstract
1517704 Barrel lock NORMAN LOCK CO 21 Nov 1975 47912/75 Heading E2A A barrel lock comprises a lock cylinder 14, rotatably mounted in casing 12, into which insertion of key 19 results in moving a number of balls 40 via pins 26 into a straight line chain so moving actuating lever 42 into engagement with slot 68 in shaft 64 which is connected via member 70 to a locking bolt. Before insertion of key 19 (Fig. 3) in cylinder 14 the cylinder is free to rotate in casing 12 but when the key is correctly inserted (Fig. 4) with lever 42 engaging slot 68 rotation of the key and hence cylinder results in rotation of shaft 64 and unlocking of bolt connected thereto. The key 19 in the form of a U-section moves two staggered rows of pins 26 in bores 22, 24, and the balls 40 are alternately offset on the pins to form a single row of balls (Fig. 7). The balls 40 are movable to a limited extent laterally relative to pins 26 in bores 22, 24 so that the longitudinal lock-opening force exerted by the balls cannot be felt through the pins 26. In a further embodiment (not shown) the lever 42 may engage a slot in the casing 12 to prevent rotation of the cylinder when the key is absent and be disengaged when the key is inserted, the cylinder being connected to a locking bolt in a conventional manner.
