Abstract

1512404 Phosphorous-containing fire retarding copolymers STAUFFER CHEMICAL CO 2 May 1975 [10 June 1974] 18410/75 Heading C3P A copolymer comprises: (1) 5-85% by weight of a bis(hydrocarbyl) vinylphosphonate of the general formula wherein X is alkyl, alkenyl, cycloalkyl or cycloalkenyl of which groups contain up to 18 carbon atoms, hydrogen, cyano, aryl or -P(O)OR<1>OR and Rand R<1> each independently represents a C1-18 hydrocarbyl group which may be substituted one or more times with non- interfering substitutents or R and R<1>, when taken together with the -O-P-O linkage, may complete a heterocyclic ring containing up to 18 carbon atoms; (2) 10-85% by weight of a monomer, other than acrylic acid methacrylic acids, which contains one ethylenically unsaturated bond and which is copolymerizable with the vinylphosphonate; and (3) 2-50% by weight of a monomer selected from acrylic acid and methacrylic acid. The specific Examples describe the preparation of copolymers comprising units formed from bis(#-chloroethyl)- vinylphosphonate, methylmethacrylate and methacrylic acid; and bis(#-chloroethyl) vinyl phosphonate, vinyl chloride and acrylic acid.
