Abstract

1508268 Disulphoanthraquinone carboxylic acids AMERICAN COLOR & CHEMICAL CORP 8 Sept 1976 [12 Sept 1975 18 Aug 1976] 37297/76 Heading C2C The invention comprises a mixture of disulphoanthraquinone carboxylic acids obtained by the direct sulphonation and concomittant or subsequent alkyl oxidation of an anthraquinone of the formula wherein R is halogen or (C 1 -C 4 ) alkyl and n is an integer from 1 to 4, at least one R being alkyl, but there being not more than three substituents in a single ring if only one ring contains substituents and not more than two substituents per ring if both rings contain substituents. The sulphonation and concomittant oxidation may be carried out by treating the anthraquinone with an excess of H 2 SO 4 containing 30 to 50% of SO 3 at 140‹ to 170‹ C., optionally in the presence of an alkali metal sulphate. Various alkylanthraquinones and alkylhaloanthraquinones are specified as starting materials.
