Abstract
1507833 Tubular heat exchangers; steam generators UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY 1 Dec 1975 [5 Dec 1974] 52710/74 Headings F4S and F4A A thermally insulating sleeve 9 is slidably inserted within each heat exchange tube 2 of a tube-in-shell heat exchanger to extend from the inlet header 7 through the tube sheet 3 to reduce heat flux in the vicinity of the sheet. The sleeve comprises a pair of spaced coaxial tubes 11, 12 sealed together at each end to define an interspace which is charged with an inert gas, e.g. krypton or argon. One end of the outer tube 12 has a flange 10 and the complementary end of the tube 11 forms a resilient arcuate rim 14. Differential expansion between the tubes 11, 12 is accommodated by the rim 14 and by waisting of the tube 11. The exchanger is used as a boiler for generating steam by heat exchange with liquid metal which is conducted through the tubes between the headers, the shell containing water.
