Abstract

1505901 Membrane apparatus JOHNSON & JOHNSON 19 May 1975 [24 May 1974 13 May 1975] 21183/75 Heading B1X [Also in Division F4] Apparatus for effecting heat or mass transfer between two fluids, comprises a first conduit for flow of one fluid, a second conduit for flow of another fluid, a heat or mass transfer membrane forming at least a portion of a common wall of the two conduits, the configuration of at least a portion of the first conduit varying periodically along the general direction of flow to define a multiplicity of zones having a ratio of pitch to depth of at least 2:1, and a pump capable of producing a pulsatile flow of low amplitude fluctuation, (defined as fluctuations in which the flow is not reversed), compared with the mean flow rate, of the fluid through the first conduit at such velocity as to provide a Reynolds number, (where U=velocity of fluid, v=kinematic viscosity and p=hollow pitch, i.e. distance between ridges), of at least 200 to induce a component of motion in the conduit which is mutually orthogonal to the surface of the membrane and the general direction of flow. In one embodiment (Fig. 3) a transfer membrane 23 of circular cross section forms a conduit 24 for flow in the direction A, with constructions 25 along its length which space zones, in the form of circumferential furrows 26, one from another. The apparatus is envisaged for use in the dialysis or oxygenation of blood, in reverse osmosis and for heat exchange.
