Abstract

150,585. Hipwell, H. Le H. Dec. 16, 1919. Alarms operated by expansion and contraction of gases; electric alarm systems. - Relates to temperature alarms of the type in which the expansion or contraction of air in a closed vessel acts through tubing upon mercury in a U-tube provided with electric contacts, so that an alarm circuit is closed or opened on the occurrence of a predetermined high or low temperature. In order to increase the sensitiveness, the mercury is contained in a part of the U-tube 7 of restricted diameter. The temperature at which the alarm is given may be adjusted either by altering the position of the high-temperature contact wire 13 by means of a screw 12, or by rotating the support 9 on which the U-tube is mounted. A flexible pipe 11 connects the U-tube to the air-tubing 10. In the case of normal slow rises of temperature, the air escapes through a slightly-open cock 16 and a filter 15. A low-temperature alarm is given by means of a wire 20, which is normally below the surface of the mercury and is included in a normally-closed circuit containing a relay, which, when the circuit is broken, closes the alarm circuit. The alarm may indicate the extinction of a light by foul gases.
