Pneumatic and hydraulic springs.-In apparatus for launching aircraft from a ship's deck, comprising a carriage connected by steel ropes with accelerating and retarding compressed air cylinders E, J, the parts are brought to rest at the end of the launching movement by the piston in the cylinder J passing its exhaust ports H<1>, trapping air between it and a buffer piston N so that compression in the cylinder provides a retarding effort, and finally engaging the buffer piston which works against hydraulic pressure and may be supplemented by a helical spring O.
