Pulverulent and liquid fuel furnaces.-A steamboiler or other furnace is provided with one or more preliminary combustion chambers located outside of a main combustion chamber and into which one or more streams of pulverulent or liquid fuel and air are delivered to effect their mixture, gasification and ignition before passing to the main combustion chamber. Fig. 1 shows a locomotive fire-box with the invention applied thereto. Fuel is supplied to the preliminary combustion chamber 153 through one or more conduits 154 by a fan or blower or by induced draught and the necessary air to complete the combustion of the fuel is admitted at the front of the chamber. The walls of the chamber 153 are covered with non-conducting material 157 and sheet metal plates 158. The preliminary combustion chamber may be arranged so that its outlet is on a level with the inclined floor 150 of the main combustion chamber A, or opposite the firing-opening 162. The outlet of the preliminary combustion chamber may be contracted, and the fuel supply conduits may be arranged to deliver separate streams of fuel converging at the outlet, as shown in Fig. 4. A modification is shown in Fig. 5 in which two superposed preliminary combustion chambers 153, 163 communicate with the main combustion chamber A and with one another through one or more vertical conduits such as 164.
