Abstract

1501971 Cleaning pipes L A R ROSS 20 Jan 1975 [21 Jan 1974] 2453/75 Divided out of 1501614 Heading F2N A long cylindrical chamber such as a pipe or a gas main is cleaned by introducing into one end of the chamber a cleaning apparatus comprising a motor 64, a rotatable scouring head comprising a boss 74 on which are pivotally mounted arms 76 each terminating in cutting cones 75, wire brushes or spring-loaded abrasive plates, an inflatable collar 65, and a swivel coupling 86 on a frame 79 providing fluid communication between a hollow shaft 83 and a hose 88 so that air supplied to a hose 84 can be passed to the collar 65, inflating the collar so as to substantially fill the cross-section of the chamber and propelling the apparatus through the chamber either by towing or by air pressure, with the motor rotating so that the scouring head scours the inner wall of the chamber, the inflation of the collar being monitored and adjusted to suit changes in bore of the chamber and to maintain the contact force between the collar and the inside wall of the chamber at a predetermined level. The motor 64 may be electrically driven or driven by air entering a passage 69 in which case air exhausting ahead of the motor may be used to blow cleaning debris ahead of the apparatus.
