Abstract

1497298 Backwashing membrane filtration apparatus ASAHI KASEI KOGYO KK 25 March 1975 [28 March 1974 23 May 1974] 12433/75 Heading B1X An ultrafiltration apparatus comprises (1) a module of a bundle of a plurality of substantially parallel hollow fibres having semipermeable walls, the fibres of at least one end of the bundle being embedded in a cast-moulding material with the ends of the hollow fibres exposed, the module being mounted in a casing having an inlet for liquid to be treated, an outlet for a liquid permeated through the hollow fibre walls and an outlet for non-permeated liquid, the cast-moulding material and hollow fibre walls forming a partition between the liquid to be treated and permeated liquid, (2) a backwashing means having a storage tank for permeated liquid for use as back-washing liquid, and (3) a control means for controlling the module and back-washing means. A method of ultrafiltration comprises a repetition of the steps (a) causing a liquid to be treated to permeate through the walls of hollow fibres. having a semipermeable wall and a continuous hollow part extending from one end of the fibres to the other, and (b) backwashing the hollow fibres by causing a part of the liquid permeated to permeate back through the fibre walls in the reverse direction. The liquid to be treated may contain a disposing agent capable of permeating through the fibre walls selected from an anionic, a non-ionic and a cationic surfactant. The liquid to be treated may be a latex (styrene-butadiene and vinyl acetate are exemplified) and the back-washing may be periodically carried out.
