Abstract

Appts. for sepn. or mixing of fluids consists of a stack of discs in a shell. The discs are made of hollow fibres, woven into a fabric, mounted in a frame so that the ends of the fibres emerge at its outer circumference. The discs are stacked and the stack is enclosed between perforated end plates and surrounded by a porous casing. The whole is fitted into the shell so that there is a space between the porous casing and the wall of the shell. The end plates of the shell have feed and discharge nozzles respectively and the bear on to the perforated end plates of thestack and are held tight by bolts drawing them together. There is a permeate nozzle in the shell wall. In separation processes, feed fluid flows perpendicularly across the discs and permeate flows through the walls of the hollow fibres and out across the porous casing and through the permeate nozzle. In mixing processes one fluid enters through the permeate nozzle, flows across the walls of the hollow fibres and mixes with the other fluid outside them. Separation processes envisaged are ultra-filtration, reverse osmosis gaseous permeation. Mixing operations are solution of gas in liq. vaporisation into gas. The appts. is simple to make and ensures good contact between circulating fluid and hollow fibres.
