Abstract
1494646 Injection apparatus W WAGNER 19 Nov 1974 49989/74 Heading A5R Injection apparatus comprises a housing 61 having a muzzle 60 into which the skin of a patient can be drawn by means of a partial vaccum produced in said muzzle, the skin being impaled on an injection needle 28 of a dosage unit 63, which needle under the action of a partial vacuum is drawn through a bore 62 communicating with the muzzle. The vacuum is produced by means of a gas flowing from cylinder 71 via valve 72 and venturi 82, the gas exiting from the housing through an aperture (87a not shown) and drawing air from within housing 61 through opening 87, the vacuum produced causing a valve 85 to open whereby the vacuum acts on the muzzle through bores 62 and 81. The dosage unit comprises a cylinder 3 within which is a piston 33 having a ram 36 received in a sleeve 89 screwed into a block 27 containing a flexible bag holding medicament and communicating with the needle 28. A flat spring 93 is connected to piston 33 and engages a ledge on block 27. When vacuum is applied to the unit via valve 85 and bores 62, 26 piston 33 is drawn downwardly within cylinder 3 and spring 93 causes block 27 to move downwardly thereby forcing needle 28 through bore 62. When block 27 reaches the bottom of cylinder 3 further movement of piston 33 causes spring 93 to engage a stop on the cylinder and snap away from the block 27 so that ram 36 bears via a plate 90 on the bag to dispense the contents thereof through the needle. Further evacuation of housing 61 opens valve 83 activating a pneumatic cylinder 64 to eject the spent dosage unit 63. The units 63 may be filled from a bulk supply container 74. In Fig. 3 the housing comprises a cavity walled cylinder, the cavity 103 of which is maintained under partial vacuum, and the needle 106 is mounted on a piston 33 maintained in raised position by pegs 98 connected by cords to pegs 97 engaging a lower piston 102 having a central aperture sealed by a piercable membrane, the piston 102 being placed against the patients skin in use of the apparatus. The pegs 97 are released by pushing inwardly pegs 98 thereby allowing piston 102 to rise pulling the patients skin with it. When pegs 98 are released they spring back to release piston 33 which descends and engages piston 102, the needle 106 piercing the patients skin. A hub 96 of the needle seats in correspondingly shaped depression in piston 102 thereby raising a port 107 in the hub into space 105 which contains medicament. Spring 95 acts to force the medicament through the needle.
