Abstract
1494511 Cross-lapping mechanisms WIRA 14 Jan 1975 [19 Jan 1974] 02645/74 Heading D1N A cross-lapper has a storage carriage 18 which feeds web to a delivery carriage 15, the delivery carriage depositing the web on a receiving surface, the storage carriage being driven in phase with movement of the delivery carriage at speed differing from half that of the delivery carriage such that differential stretching of the web is reduced. The storage carriage has an amplitude less than that of the delivery carriage by an amount in the range 2¢ to 15%. The mechanism to achieve this shown in Fig. 3 has a chain 53 drive to the delivery carriage 15 and a further chain 51 embracing the storage carriage and connected at 50 to the delivery carriage. In prior art machines the upper run of chain 51 would have a fixed point to give the storage carriage exactly half the amplitude of the delivery carriage but in the present invention the upper run of chain 51 engages a sprocket 41 geared to run at a low speed in synchronism with the drive of the delivery carriage. This produces the reduced amplitude. In an alternative embodiment, Fig. 4, separate chains 53 and 60 drive the respective carriages gearing being provided to give the desired amplitude ratio to the belts.
