Abstract

1493951 Thermoplastic elastomeric blend UNIROYAL Ltd 13 Nov 1974 [14 Nov 1973] 49112/74 Headings C3N and C3P A thermoplastic elastomeric blend comprises a cured mixture of: (A) 100 parts by weight of an unsaturated, vulcanizable rubber; (B) 125-250 parts by weight of a bituminous material, and (C) a curative for the said rubber, the said cured mixture having been prepared by masticating the components (A), (B) and (C) under time and temperature conditions sufficient to effect curing of the mixture. (A) and (B) may be masticated together at an elevated temperature before component (C) is added. The curative (C) may be sulphur, a sulphur donor curative or an organic peroxide. (B) is preferably asphalt whilst (A) is preferably a butadiene-styrene copolymer or an ethylene-propylene-non conjugated diene terpolymer. Suitable temperature and time curing conditions are 200-540‹ F. for 4-30 minutes. The composition may also contain a filler such as carbon black, silica, calcium carbonate, clay or asbestos. The bituminous material may be a mixture of two different asphalts one having a softening point of 340‹ F. and the other a softening point of 220‹ F.
