Abstract

1492633 Cutting by liquid jet CAMSCO Inc 21 March 1975 [25 Nov 1974] 11809/75 Heading B4B An apparatus for cutting sheet material, e.g. leather or fabric, by a liquid jet comprises pressure intensifying means for the liquid fed by a pipe 66, to a nozzle 44 which is movable relative to a support 28 for the material and means 72 disposed on the side of the material opposite the nozzle for receiving the liquid discharged therefrom. The nozzle 44 is mounted on a housing 43 provided with rollers 50 for movement on rails 52 forming part of a carriage 34; the carriage is provided with rollers 40 for movement on rails 42. The movement of the carriage and housing is effected by motors 36, 37 and 54 under the control of a computer. The pressurized liquid, e.g. water, is fed to the nozzle via the pipe 66 carried within an articulated arm 48, 60; the pipe is formed with convolutions (68), Fig. 5 (not shown) at the pivot points 62, 64 of the arm. A sensor (49, 51) is mounted on the nozzle so as to determine the correct height of the latter above the material. A water catcher 72 is located in a carriage and moved in synchronization with the nozzle via a rope-and-pulley device, Fig. 4. The support 28 for the material is in the form of a wire-mesh tray provided with rollers 113, 114 such that the tray can be moved via rails 116, 118 into the cutting area 20. In a modification, Figs. 6 and 7 (not shown) the material is moved via a conveyer means (132); the portion of the conveyer under the nozzle is in the form of spaced endless wires (140) mounted under tension on rollers (142, 144, 146, 148).
