Abstract

1491698 Laminated wood materials BASF AG 13 Dec 1974 [15 Dec 1973] 53919/74 Heading B5N [Also in Division B2] A curable cladding for wood materials comprises a support web (particularly of paper or woven or non-woven fabric) impregnated with a curable aminoplast or phenoplast binder and coated on one side with a curable polyester resin coating comprising a cross-linker and a polyester resin mixture consisting of 20-98% by weight of non-crystallizable unsaturated polyester and 80-2% by weight of crystalline unsaturated polyester. The binder may be an aqueous ureaformaldehyde; phenol-formaldehyde or mixed urea-melamine-formaldehyde condensate. Various polyesters are specified and may be applied by pouring, rolling, spraying or knife-coating, often as solutions in the cross-linkable monomer. The cross-linker may be styrene, chloro-styrene, methyl methacrylate, butyl acrylate, divinylbenzene or diallyl phthalate and diallyl phthalate prepolymer may itself constitute a part of the polyester resin mixture. Both the binder and polyester mixture may contain fillers and the latter may also contain an alkaline earth metal oxide or hydroxide as thickener. The claddings may be bonded to chipboard or fibreboard by means of heat and pressure, optionally with the use of an adhesive.
