Abstract
148,630. Priest, C. F. April 26, 1919. Muffle furnaces.-The furnace chamber or muffle o is heated by the gases from a fireplace a adjacent to but not below it, the gases passing first through flues at the sides of the muffle, then entering the front of the muffle through openings h and passing through openings m in the floor to flues n beneath, finally rising through a flue p at the back and escaping to the chimney through flues q in the roof. In a modification, portions of the heating gases traverse the interior of the muffle from front to back, escaping through openings in the back wall to the flue behind it. The floor of the muffle may be mounted on ball rollers for removal, the flues n being formed in it. The fire-place is preferably in two parts fired from each side and divided by a central bridge, and air is admitted above the fire through openings g from passages f in the rear wall.
