1484571 Fluidized bed combustion chamber; water tube boilers BABCOCK & WILCOX Ltd 1 Nov 1974 [2 Nov 1973] 50961/73 Headings F4B and F4A In a variable depth fluidized bed of combustible solids within an enclosed chamber, a heat exchange tube or tubes are arranged inclined to the horizontal in a plurality of vertical planes so that the length of tube immersed in the bed is dependent on the bed depth. The bed may be operated at super atmospheric pressure and boiler tubes are arranged in helices supported by downcomers from stub tubes in the furnace roof which may be removed to facilitate repair and renewal of the tubes. The depth of the bed is changed by varying the rate of removal of bed material, and a sudden reduction in the power requirement of the boiler may be met by dumping part of the bed.
