Abstract

1482200 Apparatus for use in the fluid treatment of pipes BRITISH GAS CORP 19 Nov 1974 [20 Nov 1973] 53759/73 Heading F2 Apparatus for use in the fluid treatment of the inside of pipes under pressure comprises a body having a hollow turret 4 releasably secured to a saddle 5 which has a curved face 7 and a rubber washer 8 for sealing engagement with the wall of a pipe 1, two bosses 23 on the turret 4, said bosses supporting means for holding a hose 33, and a socket wrench 16 rotatably and slidably mounted in the crown of the turret for removing and retaining a plug 3 which plugs an opening 2 in the pipe wall. Different saddles 5 may be used for different diameter pipes and the apparatus is secured to the pipe 1 by chain 12 (Fig. 2) adjustably secured to horns 9, projecting from the turret 4, by means of adjusting screws 13, nuts 14 and collars 11 which are provided with trunnions for engaging said horns. A toggle linkage 15 is also provided. Slidably mounted in each boss 23 is a guide tube 24 to which is attached a union 27, a valve 29 and an extension 31. Said guide tube can be retained in an extended or retracted position by means of screw-threads 28 and 26 respectively, which co-operate with threads in the boss 23. Seals are provided at 25 and 32. The plug 3 has a square spigot 20 which can be engaged by the socket 17 of the socket wrench 16 thus rotation of said wrench can effect screwing or unscrewing of said plug. A screw 21, having a knurled head 22 and which is rotatable within the shank of the socket wrench 16, can be screwed into a tapped hole in the spigot 20 to hold the spigot in engagement with the socket 17 and retain the plug after it has been unscrewed. The wrench can be retracted to withdraw the plug from the hole 2. and can be retained in the retracted position by means of a thread 19. A seal is provided at 18.
