Abstract

1481506 Articles coated with pressure sensitive adhesive SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ BV 30 March 1976 12744/76 Heading B2E [Also in Divisions B5 and C3] An article having a pressure-sensitive layer is characterised in that the layer consists of a composition comprising:- a) 50-97% by weight of a bituminous component, b) 3-50% by weight of one or more thermoplastic polymers and c) 5-50% by weight of a carbon black having an oil absorptivity of above 80 ml/100 g, all percentages being based on the weight of a) + b). The bituminous component is preferably a mixture of a precipitation bitumen and an extender oil. Suitable thermoplastic polymers are polyisobutylene, polyisoprene, polybutadiene, ethylene-propylene copolymers, styrene-butadiene copolymers, ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymers, ethyleneethyl acrylate copolymers, ethylene-n-butyl acrylate copolymers with the preferred polymer being a block copolymer of the formula wherein A is a polymer block of a monovinyl aromatic hydrocarbon or a 1-alkene, B is an elastomeric polymer block of a conjugated diene or more than one 1-alkene, n is 1 to 5, or a hydrogenated derivative of the block copolymer, e.g. polystyrene-polyisoprene-polystyrene, polystyrene-polybutadiene-polystyrene, polyethylene-(ethylene-propylene copolymer)- polyethylene, and polypropylene-(ethylene-propylene copolymer)-polypropylene. Articles having pressure-sensitive layer are sheets of roofing materials, e.g. of butyl rubber and ethenepropene rubber, foils of aluminium, insulating tapes, medical adhesive tapes, sound-deadening materials, and polystyrene sheets. The article may be a sheet having the pressure-sensitive layer on both of its sides. The layer may also contain pigments, glass and asbestos fibres, chalk, gypsum, diatomaceous earth and quartz flour. In the specific Examples a composition comprising a bituminous component containing a propane bitumen and an aromatic extract, polystyrene - polyisoprene - polystyrene block copolymer, polystyrene-polybutadienepolystyrene block copolymer and various carbon blacks is coated on aluminium foil.
