Abstract

1477828 Plastics material lids for containers; easy-open containers PLASTONA (JOHN WADDINGTON) Ltd 23 July 1974 [21 Aug 1973] 39455/73 Headings B8T B8C and B8D A lid 10, thermoformed from plastics sheet by means of vacuum, fluid under pressure or mechanical forming or a combination of these methods, has a downwardly directed peripheral flange 14 provided with a tear strip 18 which facilitates removal or flexing back of the region defined by the line of weakening 16 (Fig. 1). Notches in the flange 14, either side of the end of the strip 18, and the lead in lobe formation 16A aid the initial fracturing along line 16, which is a groove of reduced thickness. Another embodiment is shown in Fig. 3 where the lid 22 has a raised horse shoe shaped formation 28 and a tab 30. The tab is grasped at the end lying between the arms of the horse shoe shaped formation and acts as a lever, the pointed end 32 causing initial fracture along the line of weakening 26. A further embodiment has a tab attached to the lid with a free end lying at the centre of the lid, the free end having a stud which sits on the base of a recess formed in the centre of the lid. The free end of the tab is pulled to fracture the lid along the line of weakening. The lids shown in Figs. 3 to 6 may be applied to containers by a method involving heating and pressing of the lid flange to crimp it around an outwardly extending peripheral flange on the container as described in Specification 1,477,829. Lids without flanges may be secured to the containers by the use of adhesive or welding or a combination of both techniques.
