1476485 Aluminium oxide MATSUSHITA ELECTRIC INDUSTRIAL CO Ltd 13 Aug 1974 [13 Aug 1973 17 Nov 1973 8 March 1974] 35614/74 Heading C1A A sapphire body of aluminium oxide has foreign atoms with ionic radii of 0À2-1À5 angstroms diffused into its surface. The foreign atoms may be one or more trivalent elements, optionally gallium, indium, scandium, yttrium, lanthanum, titanium, vanadium, chromium, manganese, iron and cobalt. At least two species of foreign atoms, one of ionic radius 0À57-1À2 angstroms and another of 0À3-0À57 angstroms, may be present. They may be at least one of copper, silver, magnesium, calcium, iron, cobalt, nickel or rhodium and at least one of beryllium, silicon, germanium, nitrogen, phosphorus or palladium A foreign element(s) or compound(s) or alloy(s) thereof are deposited on the sapphire surface and the coated surface is heated, optionally to 800- 1600‹ C., to cause diffusion of the atoms of the foreign elements into the sapphire surface. Objects made with the sapphire include a stylus, bearing, shaft, pivot, knife edge, bearing plate, pen tip and yarn guide.
