Abstract

1476285 Diapers UNION CARBIDE CORP 23 May 1975 [18 June 1974] 22480/75 Heading A5R [Also in Division B5] A disposable insert for a diaper comprises an absorbent pad 12 disposed between liquidimpermeable hydrophobic sheets 14, 16 each of which is provided with openings 18, openable to permit liquid flow into the pad 12 but closable to retard back flow of absorbed liquid, and with dimples 22 in a density of at least 1, e.g. 1-100/in<SP>2</SP>. The openings 18 may be punctures or, preferably, slits of length 0.03- 0.25 inch and density 30-150/in<SP>2</SP>, arranged in parallel rows with the slits in a row at an angle to or aligned with the row axis. The dimples 22 may be of diameter .025-.250 inch and cover not more than 20% of the pad area. The sheets 14, 16 may be of ethyleneethylacrylate copolymer or polyethylene and be 0.4-2.0 mils thick, and may be heat- or adhesive-sealed at 20 to enclose the pad 12. The pad 12 may comprise a non-woven wood fluff material, or a plurality of tissue paper or wadding layers which may be associated with a polymer, in powder, shred or interleaving sheet form. which forms a gel on absorption of water. Sheets of the polymer may be used in place of the tissue layers. Suitable polymers are listed and described. The assembly of slit films and pad may be embossed by a heated roller to produce the dimples, the pad being compressed beneath the dimples. The pad alone, or both the pad and the sheets may be of "hour-glass" configuration. Reference has been directed by the comptroller to Specification 1342154.
