Abstract
1498051 Absorbent pad with compression pattern PROCTER & GAMBLE CO 13 March 1975 [14 March 1974] 10574/75 Heading A5R [Also in Divisions B4 and B5] An air-laid absorbent pad 10 for use as a baby's napkin, a bandage, surgical dressing, incontinence pad or sanitary towel is compressed so as to leave relatively less dense circular tufts 28 arranged in staggered rows, Fig. 1, within a compressed area 30. The pad comprises a layer of air laid disintegrated cellulose pulp lap 22 Fig. 2 covered on both sides by paper tissue sheets 24, 26, themselves covered by a respective sheet 14, 16. The sheeet 14 is moisture pervious, may be hydrophobic or hydrophillic and may be formed from creped, water-laid tissue paper, an air laid tissue, a continuous filament non-woven web or a micro-porous film; it may be treated with wet strength and/or bonding resins. The sheet 16 is preferably moisture impervious and can be a flexible, embossed, opaque polyethylene sheet. Both sheets 14, 16 or only the sheet 14 may be folded around the edges of the layer 22. The pad may be compressed on one or both surfaces with the compressed area 30 comprising 20-50% total area. It may be compressed uniformly before being compressed as shown and the arrangement of tufts 28 can be close packed hexagonal.
