Abstract
1475132 Spring driven couplings; retarding apparatus MICROTECNICA SpA 17 July 1974 [1 Aug 1973] 31603/74 Heading B8B [Also in Division F2] A device for transmitting a torque from a motor (not shown) to a load 8, comprises a stationary drum 1 around which is wound a helical spring 2, a rotatable drive member 12 for connection to the motor and a rotatable load member 7 from which the load 8 is suspended by a rope 9. First and second transmission means 5, 6 are mounted on the end turns 3, 4 respectively of the spring 2, while first and second transmission members 13, 14 and 10, 11 are mounted on the drive member 12 and Toad member 7 respectively, and a friction member 15 is located in groove in each of the spring's end turns 3, 4 and acts between the bottom of the groove and the surface of drum 1. Because of the weight of the load 8 transmission member 11 co-operates with transmission means 6 of the spring 2 in a direction which causes tightening of the spring 2 about the drum 1, and because of the presence of the friction members 15 the turns of the spring 2 are all in engagement with the drum 1 as shown in Fig. 5 (not shown) so that the spring 2 exerts a braking action on the load member 7 and renders the latter stationary, as long as drive member-12 is inactive. If the motor (and) thus drive member 12) is rotated in the direction opposed to the torque applied by the load 8 the transmission member 14 is rotated anti-clockwise as viewed in Fig. 1 to engage transmission means 6 in a direction to slacken spring 2 so that the torque of the motor, reduced by the dragging torque of the spring, is transmitted to the transmission member 11 of load member 7 to rotate the latter. Conversely, if the motor is rotated in the direction of the torque applied by the load 8, the transmission member 13 is rotated clockwise and engages spring transmission means 5 in a direction to slacken spring 2, so that the braking torque of the spring 2 is made equal to the torque of load 8, and the latter is lowered without dragging the motor. As shown in Fig. 2, each friction member 15 is in the form of a corrugated blade. If the load 8 is slung from the load member 7 in the sense opposite to that shown in Fig. 1 the roles of the transmission members 13, 14 are the reverse of those set out above.
