Abstract
147,330. Tate, W. H., and Hooley, J. H. June 5, 1919. Variable-speed and reversing friction gearing suitable for motor-vehicles comprises disks 4, 15 secured to a transverse shaft 18 and engaging respectively a roller 3 slidable on a driving-shaft 2 and a roller 18<a> secured to a driven shaft 26. The shaft 26 is pulled by a spring 17 against the disk 15, the pull being transmitted through the shaft 18 so as also to press the disk 4 against the roller 3. Reversed driving is effected by sliding the shaft 18 bodily to the left, disengaging the disk 4 and bringing the disk 15 into engagement with the roller 3. In a modification, the driven roller is slid on its shaft simultaneously with the driving-roller to vary the speed, and means are provided to reduce the engaging pressure and allow slip.
