461,941. Variable - speed and other friction gearing. PRYM GES., W. March 26, 1936, Nos. 9028, 9029, 9031, and 9032. Convention dates, March 30, 1935, Oct. 23, 1935, Feb. 19, 1936, and Feb. 19, 1936. [Classes 80 (i) and 80 (ii)] In friction gearing, the traction pressure between the transmitting surfaces of driving and driven members 1, 3, Fig. 1, is maintained constantly by the torque reaction of a driven shaft. The resistance of a driven wheel 8 causes a planet gear 7, which drives it, to move bodily with its housing 10, so as to press the driven friction gear 3, which is in ring form, against the driving pinion 1, this pressure being in fact the torque reaction of the driven shaft 6. The parts are also so arranged that the weight of the housing 10 and gears 7, 3 increases the traction pressure, and disconnection is readily effected by lifting the housing 10 by a link 12. In a variable-speed arrangement shown in Fig. 4, the driving pinion 1 of Fig. 1, is replaced by a cone 14 along which the driven ring 18 is adapted to be slid by thrusting a control rod 22 axially of itself. An arrangement is described in which the cone moves axially instead of the ring. An arrangement is described with reference to Figs. 6, 7 and 8 (not shown), having double coned friction members. An arrangement suitable for driving a vehicle is described with reference to Figs. 9 and 10 (not shown), in which there is a cone and ring for variable forward speeds and a clutch for direct drive, and another cone and ring for variable reversed speeds. In changing the direction of drive, the reversed torque reaction causes a swing over from engagement with one cone to engagement with the other.
