Abstract
1472234 Coating metal surfaces BALFOUR BEATTY Ltd 20 Feb 1976 [20 Feb 1975] 7177/75 Headings B2E and B2L [Also in Divisions B5] A coating of corrosion resistant material is applied to an exposed metal surface or surfaces, e.g. a section of a metal girder 11, by surrounding the surface or surfaces with a flexible shroud 2, e.g. of polyethylene, and sealing boundary edges 3 of the shroud to form a substantially fluid tight enclosure, evacuating air and other fluids from the enclosure, allowing liquid or semi-liquid corrosion resistant material to form a coating on the surface or surfaces, wthdrawing excess coating material and permitting or causing the coating material to harden. If the exposed surface or surfaces are at least partially submerged in water, e.g. the hull H of a ship, the shroud is arranged so that the shroud or an extension of it protrudes above the water surface. Water is evacuated from the sealed enclosure and replaced by air. Then corrosion resistant material flows into the enclosure through ports 33 and the enclosure is evacuated so that the metal surface or surfaces are coated and the coating is allowed to harden. The shroud may be removed before final hardening takes place. Water may be removed from the metal surface or surfaces by drawing warm oxygen free nitrogen, dry air or other gaseous fluid through the enclosure before evacuation. An area of the shroud may carry on the surface nearer that to be coated a porous sheet, e.g. mesh or netting, to space the shroud for the surface or surfaces to be coated.
