Abstract
1470036 Sound absorbing laminate LOCKHEED AIRCRAFT CORP 17 Jan 1975 2174/75 Heading B5N [Also in Divisions G5 and H3] A wide range sound absorber comprises an impermeable backing sheet 1, a core of orthogonally intersecting portions 2, 3, an array 4 of tapered horns 5, and may have a permeable facing sheet 11, all of which are bonded together, e.g. by an adhesive. The mouths of the horns 5 may be circular, square or rectangular and may be above, flush with or below the top of said core. The narrow throat of the horn in the embodiment of Fig. 1 is spaced from the backing sheet 1 but in other embodiments said throat contacts the sheet 1 and an aperture is provided in the horn (Figs. 3, 4, not shown). The array 4 is preferably made from vacuumformed plastics, and the facing sheet 11 from fibre metal, perforated metal, porous paper, porous ceramic or other suitable material having a flow resistance of the order of 1 pc (p and c respectively being the density of and velocity of sound in the propagating fluid medium). The shape of the horn may be exponential, hyperbolic, catenoidal, Bessel or conical.
