Abstract

1467410 Resol resin adhesives SOC ITALIANA RESINE SIR SpA 6 June 1974 [15 June 1973] 25285/74 Heading C3R A quick-hardening adhesive composition consists of a resol phenolic resin, 0À5-4% wt. of free formaldehyde based on the weight of the composition and 0À5-6% wt. of an alkali metal carbonate, preferably sodium or potassium carbonate, based on the weight of the composition, the weight ratio of the free formaldehyde to alkali metal carbonate being from 0À08/1 to 8/1. Preferred resol resins are obtained by reacting phenol and formaldehyde in a molar ratio of 1/1 to 1/2À5 in the presence of a basic catalyst, e.g. an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal oxide or hydroxide, at 30-100‹ C., and have the following properties: curing time 60- 180 sec.; dry content 38-45% wt.; pH-9-12, viscosity in Ford No. 4 cup of 25‹ C. of 30-70 sec., and total compatibility with water. The adhesive may be compounded with an inert filler and/or protein extender substance.
