Abstract

1467366 Alkylating alkylaromatic hydrocarbons CONTINENTAL OIL CO 21 Aug 1974 [26 Nov 1973 15 July 1974] 36796/74 Heading C5E A synthetic lubricant composition comprising (1) di(C 6 -C 18 linear alkyl) aromatic hydrocarbons wherein the aryl moiety is phenyl, tolyl or xylyl and (2) trialkyl tetrahydronaphthalenes containing a total of 18 to 42 carbon atoms is prepared by alkylating a mixture of mono C 6 - C 18 alkylaromatic hydrocarbons and dialkyltetrahydronaphthalenes containing 12-24 carbon atoms with 0À1-1 moles of C 6 -C 18 linear mono-olefin per mole aromatic feed in the presence of AlCl 3 or AlBr 3 as catalyst, and recovering the desired product. The lubricant may comprise 60-95 wt. per cent of (1) and 5-40 wt. per cent of (2) and have a viscosity not more than 15,000 cs. at -40‹ F.
